ET 1 Cattle: Anaesthesia, Analgesia and Surgery

Syllabus:

Legislation. Pre and post-operatice care. Anaesthesia: local regional and general.Surgery. Respiratory: tracheostomy, larygostomy. GIT/Abdomen: Exploratory laparotomies, rumenotomy, rumen fistulation, left displaced abomasums, right dilatation, displacement and torsion of abomasums, caecal dilatation and torsion, intestinal intussusceptions, conditions of the umbilicus and congenital structures and rectal prolapse. Routine procedures disbudding and dehorning, castration, bull ring, supernummery, teat removal. Eyes: Enucleation of the eye and tarsoraphy. Orthopaedic:Claw amputation, contracted tendons, spastic paresis (tenotomy, tibial neurectomy), hip replacement, fracture repair, joint flushing and joint arthrodesisis. Teat Surgery: Teat:obstructions:basal/mid-teat/apex, teat lacerations: flap wounds/deep lacerations/deep penetrating wounds into teat canal. Reproductive tract: Prolapsed vagina, urovaginal, vasectomy, urethrostomy, penile amputation, tube cystomy.

  ET 2 Bull Health, Selection and Breeding Soundness

Syllabus

Factors influencing puberty and the breeding capability of the bull. Interpret a bull proof and minimising dystocia. Reproductive diseases of the bull. Common health problems encountered in breeding bulls. Physical examination of a bull for breeding soundness. Collection and evaluation of a semen sample. Monitoring and measuring bull fertility. Investigating poor (bull) fertility. Bull biosecurity and protection of the herd. Health and management plans for the bull. Teasers: vasectomy.

 ET 3 Essential Cattle Medicine   

   

Syllabus

This course is for veterinarians who wish to attain an advanced post-graduate knowledge of key topics in cattle medicine. At the end of the course delegates should have the theoretical knowledge to investigate clinical cases at an advanced level. The key topics will include: clinical examination, clinical techniques, clinical pathology, differential diagnosis, further investigations, sample taking, and therapeutics.

 ET 4 Dairy Cow Reproduction: Fertility, Obstetrics and Ultrasonography

Syllabus

Normal ovarian cycle postpartum return to cyclical activity, Pharmacological control. Milk progesterone assays. Reproductive parameters, data analysis and targets.Causes of infertility. Early embryonic loss, abortion and stillbirths. Oestrus detection and oestrus synchronization. Methods of pregnancy diagnosis. Termination of pregnancy and induction of parturition. Pre-calving problems, dystocia, post-calving problems. Reproductive ultra-sonography. Technologies: embryo collection, preservation, embryo transfer, legislation, code of practice, ova collection, in-vitro fertilization, semen sexing and AI.
